Hemp oil and CBD oil are often used interchangeably — but they are not the same thing. Confusing them can lead to buying a product that won’t do what you’re expecting.

The Short Version

Hemp seed oil is pressed from hemp seeds. It contains NO CBD. It is rich in omega fatty acids. CBD oil is extracted from hemp flowers, stalks, and leaves. It contains CBD. It is used for wellness effects.

Hemp Seed Oil

Pressed from hemp seeds through cold-pressing — no CBD, no cannabinoids. Contains omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in an ideal 3:1 ratio, Vitamin E, minerals, and protein. Available in grocery stores for $10-$20. Legitimate uses: cooking, skincare, nutritional supplementation.

CBD Oil

Extracted from hemp flowers, leaves, and stems. Contains CBD (and in full-spectrum: other cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids). Used for anxiety relief, sleep improvement, pain, and general wellness. Costs $30-$150+ from dedicated CBD brands.

How to Tell Them Apart

Hemp seed oil signs: Says cannabis sativa seed oil or hemp seed oil. Shows fatty acids but no CBD mg in supplement facts. Very cheap ($10-30). Found in grocery aisle. CBD oil signs: Says hemp extract or full-spectrum hemp extract. Shows mg of CBD per serving. Certificate of Analysis confirming cannabinoid content. From a dedicated CBD brand.

The Marketing Deception Problem

Unethical brands market products as 3000mg Hemp Oil on Amazon — where 3000mg refers to the weight of hemp seed oil with ZERO CBD. Always look for a third-party Certificate of Analysis specifically identifying CBD content per serving.
