More people are combining CBD and alcohol than ever before — sometimes intentionally (CBD cocktails) and sometimes unintentionally. What actually happens when you mix them?

What Research Shows

Blood Alcohol Levels: A 1979 study found subjects who took CBD before consuming alcohol had significantly lower blood alcohol levels than those who consumed alcohol alone, despite drinking the same amount. Neuroprotective Effects: Animal studies suggest CBD may reduce alcohol-related brain damage. A 2013 study found transdermal CBD reduced neurodegeneration from alcohol exposure by up to 49%.

How CBD and Alcohol Interact

Potentiation of Sedation: Both have sedative properties. Combining them can enhance drowsiness, reduce reaction time, and impair coordination more than either alone. Do not drive after combining CBD and alcohol. Liver Enzyme Competition: Both are metabolized by liver CYP450 enzymes. Those with liver disease or on multiple medications should consult their doctor.

CBD for Hangover

CBD’s mechanisms are relevant to specific hangover symptoms. Nausea: CBD acts on 5-HT1A serotonin receptors — a legitimate anti-nausea mechanism. Headache: Anti-inflammatory effects may reduce hangover headaches. Hangxiety: Anxiolytic properties directly address the rebound anxiety of hangover.

Practical Recommendations

Start low — take less CBD than normal when combining with alcohol. Never drive after combining. Monitor effects — some people experience significant sedation. For alcohol reduction goals: Talk to your doctor; CBD is not a medically approved cessation treatment but some research suggests it may reduce cravings.
